Sunshine in a Bottle – 5+ Steps to Overcoming the Winter Blues

fall/winter forecast

Well, whether I like it or not, it’s that time of year again.

There is no doubt, that Autumn is my favorite season of the year. I absolutely love to witness the changing colors of the leaves on the trees, the soups, the country drives to collect apples and other seasonal fruits and veggies, football on Sundays… GO GIANTS! I’m a fan of fall fashion and autumn colors, and so much more. That said…

I do NOT like the incoming rainy forecast that has started upon us, especially here in the Pacific Northwest. It’s the beginning of a very long (many months) stretch of gloomy dreary damp cold days. Can you tell I’m not a fan. Unfortunately, I see many patients, clients and friends who suffer with Season Affect Disorder SAD, but there are definitely ways to help combat the gloom. And, like it or not, I am here and will attempt to make the most of it, so I would love to share some of the ways I will try to move through this next long stretch of months, without feeling too blue.

Here’s my list:

  1. Exercise: this is one of the most important ways to shift your energy. Get out and move your body, even if it’s a brisk, bundled up walk in the rain, exercise is a sue fire way to quickly revitalize you and uplift your spirits. I have my stationary exercise bike on my back porch, and in the morning, I bundle up in my sweats and start spinning my legs, and I have to admit, I always feel better, not to mention healthier, when I am done.
  2. Be outdoors: Although fall and winter are times that in Chinese medicine we become more internal and turn inward, it’s important to get some fresh air during the day. Like exercise, this will help your qi (energy) shift.
  3. Socialize & connect: In the summer it seems much easier to socialize and connect with neighbors and friends, and in the winter we begin to hunker down and hibernate. This of course is natural, so don’t fight it, but do try to remember to connect and laugh and socialize with others, and I don’t mean on Facebook only 😉
  4. Eat healthy! Although seasonally, our natural diet changes, and heavier more warming foods are desired, try to continue eating your veggies including greens, and also, try not to overeat.
  5. Wild Orange Essential oil from doTERRA! This is the one I am most excited about, and have been having amazing results with. I have been using the wild orange every day in my morning smoothie, and of course a little drips down the side of the bottle, so I quickly rub it into my wrists and inhale deeply while my smoothie is blending up. I am not kidding when I say, that it’s like sunshine in a bottle, and it instantly uplifts my mood!
  6. And… I can NOT forget the Vitamin D supplements daily… this is really essential, especially this time of year!

Here’s what else these awesome oils are great for (from Dr. Susan Lawton’s book Living Healthy & Happily Ever After):

Wild Orange: The medicinal properties of the rind have been used for centuries for a digestive tonic. The early Chinese belied that the scent of wild orange oil would create an atmosphere of good fortune and prosperity for the entire family. in eighteenth century Europe, orange oil gained a reputation for alleviating nervous disorders, heart problems, colic, asthma and melancholy. Wild orange oil has anti inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and antiseptic properties. It helps with reducing gas, enhances circulation and detoxifies, glands, tissues, the liver and gallbladder. Emotionaly, wild orange brings peace and happiness to the mind and body and joy to the heart, which provides emotional support to help on overcome depression.

Other essential oils from doTERRA that are used to help overcome the blues would be:

Elevation: (I also use this topically and diffused almost everyday, it has an amazing aroma, and it affects people immediately when diffused in a room) This uplifting combination of essential oils creates an energetic aroma that can help stimulate the body’s chemistry she a person is feeling lethargic or sad. (from Modern Essentials)

Citrus Bliss: (Reminds me of a creamsicle, can’t help but smile when you deeply smell this amazing blend.)In addition to the elevating properties, may of the citrus oils in this blend have been studied for their ability to cleanse and to disinfect.

So there you have it, 5 steps to prepare you for the upcoming gloom. Just a side note, doTERRA’s oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and have the highest standards and quality I know. I use tons of them personally to stay healthy physically, emotionally and mentally. I also use them in my practice with my patients and clients with outstanding results.
