Can Gratitude Help You Become Healthier?

“The starting point of all success is to give thanks for that which you already have.”

– Anthony Fernando

Have an “attitude of gratitude”. Have you heard that before? Most of us have heard some version of that expression, but how seriously do we take it? Or, how often do we actually express and feel it. It is so amazing to me how easy it is to forget to be grateful for all of the many wonderful things in our life.

It does not matter how crappy we think things are at the moment,  there are ALWAYS things that we can be grateful for in our lives.By definition, “gratitude is the “quality” of being thankful”. There is definitely a visceral feeling of emotion that comes from a place of deep gratitude. Gratitude is often remembered by the bigger/grander gestures bestowed upon us, but often lost in the everyday more subtle gifts that we may take for granted.

As I said before, it is so easy to forget to be grateful for the things that we already have, and it’s especially hard to remember when we feel like “things” are not going our way or they are not as we wanted or expected them to be. This is probably the MOST important time to fully express our gratitude.

I just recently read that “until we are truly grateful for what we already have, we are not likely to receive more”. This can be applied to any area of our lives, money, relationships and of course our health. An attitude of gratitude helps us open our hearts so that we are able to receive more into our lives.

Recently, I’ve been doing this myself. First thing in the morning, as soon as I open my eyes and before I get out of bed, I try to mentally list about 3-5 things that I am grateful for before I even begin to start my day. Not only do I list them, but more importantly, I try to feel the real emotion behind my gratitude. For me, doing this upon waking really sets the tone for my day, gives me perspective and appreciation for anything more that comes my way that day.

I have to admit, I’ve recently added to my gratitude list how grateful I am for all of the wonderful kind feedback I’ve been getting on my new e-book, The 5-Element System to Sexy, Sizzle, Stamina & Self-confidence. It’s my gift to you! Download it for free here!

I’ve also given this exercise to some of my clients. One of them decided to journal about it and start a gratitude journal. In the two weeks between our conversations, there was a complete change in her voice and energy. She had a new “lightness” about her. She said that keeping this gratitude journal has really helped her feel great about her life and to be able to manage her stressors everyday that now somehow seem a lot easier to handle and less significant.

Your challenge: Beginning tomorrow morning, as you open your eyes, before your feet hit the floor, mentally or write down 3-5 things you are grateful for right now! Do this daily for several days in a row and let me know what changes for you. I prefer to do this exercise first thing in the morning, but some prefer it right before bed time. Do you have a ritual that you do for expressing gratitude?
