Recipe: Protein-Punch Sexy Superfood Smoothie

When my daughter was in high school, she worked at a café as a barista and made delicious drinks. One of her specialties was coming up with amazing smoothies. She used to make me this INCREDIBLE smoothie all the time that was full of protein. She would mix soy milk, peanut butter, half a banana, and a dash of chocolate syrup. And sometimes, if I needed a little pick-me-up, she’d put two shots of espresso in it. I’m telling you, it was as delicious as it sounds – how could those ingredients together NOT be wonderful? Well, I recently created my own HEALTHY version that is just as yummy, but a lot better for you – the Protein-Punch Sexy Superfood Smoothie!

As my daughter’s specialty was concocting yummy smoothies, one of my favorite things to do is to take less then healthy recipes and make them nutritious and delicious. To punch up my daughter’s concoction, I added the Peruvian SUPERFOOD, maca powder. Maca, known as the Andean Aphrodisiac, has so many superfood benefits. In addition to enhancing your libido (there’s a reason I called it the SEXY superfood smoothie 😉 ), maca has the power to balance your body. It boosts the mood, and can help with issues such as anemia, chronic fatigue, depression, infertility, malnutrition, stomach cancer, poor memory, stress tension, and many more syndromes. Maca has been used by the Peruvian Quechua for thousands of years, and is thought to be enhanced even more when consumed in unison with cacao. And that is great for me – I’ll take any excuse to add a little cacao powder to my smoothies!

To make the smoothie even better, I replaced soy milk with almond milk, and I tried replacing the peanut butter with sunflower seed butter. You can use any nut butter you like – let me know if you find a favorite!

Ingredients:

8 oz. almond milk

1 tbsp maca powder

1 tbsp cacao powder

1-2 tbsp. Hemp Seed powder

1/2 large banana (or 1 small banana)

1 heaping tbsp nut butter  (i.e.  sunflower seed butter, peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, etc.)

1 tsp raw organic agave nectar or honey

Ice (optional)

Chocolate Berry Smoothie
